Belly Dance Music

Belly dancing is one of the oldest forms of entertainment worldwide. In most cultures in today's era, belly dancing is performed in nightclubs. There are several essential things that belly dancing requires if you are just starting out and want to learn the art of belly dancing. Perhaps the most important and crucial part of belly dancing involves the belly dance music. There are many forms of belly dance music that is used to perform the art of belly dancing all over the world. The belly dance music, however, usually reflects the culture and style of the belly dance that the dancer is trying to portray.

In the United States, popular forms of hip hop music and jazz can actually be used as belly dance music for more modern styles of belly dancing. Many women choose this type of belly dance music because it conveys a sense of culture for the Western world, as well as provides some useful music to make the belly dancing art form still a seductive dance. In fact, one of the Belly Dance Superstars, Kami Liddle, continually uses the jazz and hip hop forms of belly dance music to portray the type of belly dancing that she regularly performs.

For more traditional styles of belly dancing, however, the Middle Eastern belly dance music, like Arabic tunes, can be used to carry on the tradition and learn the correct and true form of belly dancing. Some of this Middle Eastern belly dance music includes music taken from Turkey, Israel, Egypt, as well as Iraq and Syria. The Middle East was considered the origin of belly dancing so the belly dance music that comes from these parts of the world is considered to be some of the best original music that is used for dancing. An example of Middle Eastern belly dance music includes an album composed by Adam Basma. Some of the belly dance music pieces that he placed together on an album include songs that were taken from Syria and Iraq, which as mentioned, is considered to be the origin of the art of belly dance itself.

Some women, however, prefer to learn belly dance music all by themselves. It is sometimes recommended by belly dance experts and dancers that if you want to learn how to truly belly dance then you should jump into the belly dance music that is provided so that you can know how to dance and flow with the music itself. One important component of belly dance music is the tambourine, also called dombec in the Middle Eastern culture. The dombec is the instrument that is widely used when composing belly dance music. Being able to understand how to correctly play the tambourine, or dombec, at the right times in the belly dance music, an apprentice belly dancer may be able to get the hang of and understand the art of belly dancing better than if she didn't learn how to play the tambourine. One can recognize the beats by playing the tambourine and this goes a long way into understanding belly dance music and how it is reflected in the belly dance itself.

There are many aspects that one should consider when choosing the type of belly dance music that she is going to dance to. However, the choice mostly lies in what form of belly dance will be performed and what type of belly dance music that a person enjoys!

Beginner's Guide to Finding Belly dance Music
by Arabella

You've been taking classes for a few weeks now; you like the belly dance music and would like to begin a small collection. But where to start? Here's your guide...

The best place to start is your instructor. Pick her brain - ask her to show you what she uses in class, ask who the artist is, and why she chose that particular piece of music. Some instructors provide tapes for practice, and this is a great idea. Not only does it mean that you can practice between classes, but you will do better in class because you'll be familiar with the belly dance music.

Moving further afield, there are various options to explore: the public library, record stores, Middle Eastern shops, and mail-order.

One recording opens with Marilyn Monroe's famous I Wanna Be Loved By You - and I can't remember anything else about the rest except that I thought it was dreadful! And certainly not belly dance music.

But only a couple of tracks sound like belly dance music to me, and I find the rest to be fairly sappy. And I could most definitely live without the Arabic-ized cover version of Zorba the Greek! 肚子舞会是有趣的。
