Belly dance is a Western name coined for a style of dance developed in the Middle East and other Arabic-influenced areas
In the Arabic language it is known as Raqs Sharqi and in Turkish as Oryantal dansı, which is translated as "Dance of the East". For Europeans, this translation sounded like a perfect fit, hence it was also known as "Oriental dance", "danse Oriental", "Exotic oriental dance", "Oriental belly dance", and the like.
The term "Raqs Sharqi" is claimed to be originated in Egypt. The name suggested an exotic dance originated elsewhere, and thus it had a higher status than the local dance. The dance has been known through the oral tradition in Egypt since the pre-Islamic times.

In Arabic, the folk dance that mothered Oriental dance came to be identified as Raks Baladi. Raks meaning dance and Baladi roughly meaning of the country. A distinction between native and foreign dance became necessary after European occupation. Before this it was simply referred to as Raks (derived from the word rejoice).
For centuries, Raks Baladi was enjoyed at festive occasions and in the home by men, women and children. In gender separate parties/living quarter's people would dance for each other for fun in their party or regular clothes. Raks Baladi continued in this vein until the influx of European tourists in the 1800's. The Europeans created a demand for public performance and this sparked a segue into performance art.

In Arabic, the dance is called Raks Sharqi, meaning "Oriental Dance". Bellydancing was later translated from the French Danse du Ventre, or stomach dance, which was used to describe tribal dances from a group of matriarchal Berbers in Algeria called the Oulid Nail. Bellydancing is not the only dance done by women in the Middle East. There are regional folkloric dances which also emphasize hip and abdominal movements. However, bellydancing is the most popular well known international dance.
The dance was done with many layers of colorful clothing, belted at the waist. No skin showed. The dancers bounced layers of skirts by tilting their pelvises violently.

Gwen:
Belly dance has also allowed me to immerse myself in a culture. I play Mid-Eastern music on a drum called a doumbek. I perform in Mid-Eastern restaurants and sample the food. I know the long history of the oldest dance on Earth, an ancient history that is passed down from dancer to dancer.
The community of belly dancers is diverse. We are all ages, and come from many occupations. We have different levels of involvement; some belly dance every once in a while, others are completely immersed. All are welcome, however, in this great network, and all are valued. The seasoned dancer who has been performing for years has a wealth of knowledge and experience to impart, while new dancers bring a freshness. Belly dance provides a camaraderie for all who love and understand it.
There is a mystery to the dance I cannot put on paper. Words cannot describe it. Anyone who watches the dance, however, sees it. It comes from the ancients, from the sacredness of the dance so many women have performed through the ages. It is the spiritual aspect of the belly dance that only another dancer can come close to understanding, although it is different for each individual.
